How do you socialize w/ charity families?

I'm supposed to "mingle" with recipients of a charity I'm involved with at their holiday banquet, but I've never even seen someone like that, especially children! I'm kind of worried...do I ignore their difficult past, bring it up, be scarily nice...what do I do?
